TAR UMT Goes To The Roots

The Department of Social Science, TAR UMT Penang Branch, conducted a read aloud session with the children at the Penang Children’s Library on 11 February 2023.

The aim of the activity was to highlight the importance of literacy amongst children and to encourage children to put down their gadgets and to pick up a book. We hope to inspire parents at the library to read along with their children to empower their children by encouraging them to ask questions about what they read and give clear and objective responses to children’s queries. Reading needs to be encouraged and developed from a young age so that it is already a habit when they enter university in the future.

Reading aloud is an important activity for children as this will encourage an emerging interest in reading, make young readers more aware of the pronunciation of words and intonation, and allow them to learn new vocabulary. By conducting this activity at the library, we hope to bring awareness to parents of the need to read aloud with their children.
